Lutheran Church Collects Food and Clothes for Those in Need

The Lutheran Church of Madison collects used clothing for the poor and needy, along with food for the hungry.

The Lutheran Church of Madison (LCM) has announced that their Used Clothing Shed at the rear of their parking lot is once again open after being closed during the early months of the pandemic.

In 2019, prior to the pandemic, LCM collected more than 20,000 pounds of pants, shirts, socks, sport uniforms, dresses, shoes, sneakers, coats, belts, jackets, sweaters, purses, hand-bags, linens, blankets, quilts, drapes, curtains, hats, gloves, towels, bed sheets, stuffed animals and many other clothing items. Please do NOT drop off furniture, electronics, household items, books, toys, pillows and rags.

Everything that is collected is distributed through various organizations to the poor and needy in the United States and around the world. According to the EPA, about 85% of used clothing ends up in a landfill. Our Clothing Shed allows people to recycle and to put their used clothing and linens to work in helping someone else.

LCM also supports the three food panties in the towns of Guilford, Madison and Clinton. Each week, members bring food to the church for distribution to each food pantry site. Last year, these three food pantries, which rely totally on local donations, served about 12,000 families.

During the pandemic, the need for food has become greater than ever. LCM then opened the food collection to the community—helping to feed hungry families here in our own area. Food can be dropped off at the church at 9 Britton Lane each Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
