By Ellen R. Delisio

Keigwin’s 21st Century Community Learning Center (21stCCLC) program hosted its annual Black History Month open house February 7, drawing 21stCCLC families and community members.

About 40 people attended the program, which showcased an extensive Black History exhibit featuring local and national events and figures. Visitors also participated in a scavenger hunt. Local African-American veterans were among the honored guests for the evening.

"This event was a great opportunity for students and their families to interact with school administrators, teachers, and other educators while celebrating Black History Month,” said Patricia Jepson, Ph.D., program director, 21st Century Community Learning Centers at Keigwin and Woodrow Wilson Middle Schools. “Everyone enjoyed good conversations, great exhibits, and good food."

Guests also had a chance to meet 21st Century staff members and other families in the program. “We did the scavenger hunt and I wanted to see all the displays and meet the teachers and people who support the whole program,” said Jody Moroni, whose son, Max, is enrolled.

Moroni and several other parents talked about how much their children enjoy the 21st Century offerings and how the program benefits their families. “Max has gotten so involved in meeting new children and this opens his eyes to diversity,” she said, adding that he has tried new activities such as KrossFit. “And I know he’s safe and I know where he is until I pick him up.”

The 21st Century program really fills a need, added Andrew Harlan, whose son William attends. “This is huge for us,” Harlan said. “He has fun and gets his work done as well. It’s good to learn from different people and be exposed to different ideas.” William has been enjoying the drones, he added, and spending time with friends. Since he completes his homework during the program, Harlan added, “He is relaxed, calm and happy” when he gets home.

Another parent, Kathy DiGrande, said her daughter is enjoying the dance class and benefiting from exposure to different activities. “It’s nice that I can go to work and know that she has a place to go that is safe.”

Wondtresia Hardy’s daughter Gia also is enjoying dance as well as other activities. “The staff is great and we get peace of mind and the program is well-rounded.” Added Gia: “I like dance and hanging out with my friends--I have fun and get my homework done.”
