Central Connecticut Seniors Defying the Odds

12 Inspirational "60-Somethings" to be Featured on 2021 Calendar

HARTFORD, CT (January 18, 2021) — The pages of a calendar reveal a new year and new opportunities; for many Baby Boomers, “prioritize my health” is likely on their 2021 resolution list. Exemplifying just that is a dynamic group of 12 Central CT “60 somethings” — seniors who prove that a positive attitude is the right fuel to help them overcome chronic health conditions and live a longer, healthier life. From battling breast cancer for the second time, to volunteering with survivors of domestic abuse, to receiving a lifesaving heart transplant — in an effort to “pay it forward,” the Central CT 60 Strong Ambassadors are sharing their stories and spirit with their peers.

These 12 inspirational seniors, who range in age from 60 to 69, were selected to be “pin ups” on an exclusive 2021 calendar; they are highlighted alongside notable Central Connecticut landmarks, featuring area activities and events that seniors can enjoy. The calendar will also feature health tips and provide information about Medicare information sessions and open enrollment. The 60 Strong Ambassadors were chosen by a celebrity panel of judges, including Hartford media personalities, a state representative, and leaders in the community who were impressed by their unique stories that all shared a common thread – grit, resilience and a fervent drive to give back.

The winners are as follows:

One 60 strong ambassador, Cynthia Bastiany has dedicated her life to helping others. For 37 years she has worked with families in need and provided counseling to people with HIV/AIDS. Today, she serves as a street minister, where she offers support to people experiencing homelessness and works with survivors of domestic abuse—always providing unconditional love and support. She also cares for her mother and volunteers through hospice. When asked by others if she is “afraid” to work with those experiencing homelessness, Cynthia admits, “I cannot be afraid of what God has called me to do.”

Another ambassador, Michael Tutler, is a walking miracle. He has survived multiple life-threatening illnesses including heart problems, leukemia, viral meningitis and shingles. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2007, Michael reached end-stage heart failure and waited 46 days on the transplant list. He will never forget the day when doctors told him that he had a match and would be receiving a donor heart. Now through Donate Life, Michael mentors others who are awaiting transplants, providing comfort and strength. Michael says they call him the “transplant poster child” and that he’s been “blessed over and over and over again,” and he continues to count his blessings.
