Re-posted from my blog: Malted Musings.
There are tons of things happening with CT breweries, so much so I had to split my update into two articles! Click here for the first one, then read on to see what’s going down in three brands new to CT.
Some new great new guys on the scene are Firefly Hollow Brewing Co.. They opened back in October 2013 and currently running a tasting room out of the brewery. They have been developing styles since 2010 and are focused on flavor rather than style. They like to brew beers that are high on flavor and hit interesting flavor notes, rather than conforming to any set definition. This is a brewery that is established already with several solid styles and good brewing sense: their Brown Coat Ale was fantastic at the fest. Not only do they brew awesome beer, but they’re super friendly as well; they highly encouraged me (and by proxy you reading this) to swing on by the brewery, try some beers, and have some good time.

Overshores Brewing Co. is a East Haven brewery that is focused on brewing all Belgian-style beer. This is a newer brand that wants to focus on traditional Belgian beer with a slight twist. Having a twist in a Belgian style isn’t really as heretical as you may think, as traditionally Belgian beer can really come in many wide & varied taste profiles. Overshores wants to embrace this. Though its a tall order, Overshores has brewed some fantastic Belgian-style beers and I can’t wait to see what Belgian styles Overshores comes out with next. Who knows: they just may end up being CT’s answer to Ommegang!
Jack’s Abby Brewing is actually a Massachusetts brand, but they have recently released into CT. They are out of Framingham Massachusetts and they only brew lagers. They focus on crisp flavor and want to change the mind of consumers who associate lagers with cheaper macro beers. Jack’s Abby only uses local ingredients and has been open for the past three years. They have just starting distributing outside state lines as of this summer, so now is you chance to get you hands on some of this awesome, complex lager.

At the time of writing this I know of at least one or two more breweries that are pushing for an opening in CT; it’s really amazing how fast the beer world is expanding! If you still have some time off for summer I highly encourage you to go to any of the breweries detailed in the update, or at least give some new local beer a shot. As I said in the first update, we are living in extremely fortunate times for a beer lover right now; don’t let this abundance of great beer pass you by!
