Davonté Mitchell Receives Scholarship
Davonté Mitchell has received the 2021 Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center Scholarship.

OLD SAYBROOK, CT - The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center (the Kate), is pleased to announce Davonté Mitchell as the recipient of the 2021 Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center Scholarship. Created in honor of the Kate's 10th anniversary, the scholarship recognizes a high school senior residing in Old Saybrook who demonstrates a passion for and participation in the arts.
Davonté Mitchell realized that music would be a big part of his life during his elementary years and considers Goodwin Elementary School music teacher, Lois Geer, a key inspiration. Throughout his high school career he has performed in choir, musical theater, and band but also excelled as an athlete and was chosen as co-captain of the varsity football team. As a tenor saxophonist, he has performed with the Old Saybrook Jazz Band and Jazz Combo ensemble under the direction of Jeremy Taylor, who encouraged Davonté to start playing the saxophone.
“Ever since I was little I found myself being drawn to all things music, it’s almost therapeutic for me,” said Davonté. “I have a lot to learn, but I accept the challenge of whatever comes next for me. I hope I can inspire my students as an elementary music teacher the way my mentors have.” Davonté will attend Western Connecticut State University as a music education major.
The scholarship panel, comprised of Tara Winch, Margaret Samela, Maureen Zavatone, and John Gage, reviewed written applications and conducted Zoom interviews as part of the decision-making process. The Kate looks forward to continually recognizing accomplished and creative Old Saybrook students with this scholarship for years to come.
