Environmental News Updates

From John Hall, Director Of The Jonah Center

Residents Speak Out Against Power Plant Expansion:
At the Common Council WebEx workshop held on Feb. 11, the public showed up in large numbers and spoke in opposition to the proposed new combustion turbine at the NRG power plant on River Road. Thank you so much to all who participated. View the recording of the workshop here. Facts pertaining to climate change, emissions, the electrical grid in New England, and the city’s tax agreement with NRG are here. The city now has the option to terminate the tax agreement since the proposed plant has failed for 3 years in a row to obtain a contract with the Independent Systems Operator in New England (ISO-NE). Several bills addressing climate change are being watched and supported by the CT League of Conservation Voters (see below).

Environmental Bills Before the Connecticut Legislature:
A variety of proposed bills before the Connecticut General Assembly, with links to briefing papers, may be found here on the website of the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters. We urge all environmentally conscious citizens to support bills by writing to legislators and submitting testimony when bills are given a committee hearing. Bills supported by CTLCV pertain to: A 100% Zero Carbon Electrical Grid; the Bottle Bill; Composting; Energy Efficiency Standards; Idling of Motor Vehicles; Pesticides; the Transportation Climate Initiative; Early Voting; Environmental Justice; A Moratorium On Construction of New Fossil Fuel Power Plants; and others. Bills opposed by CTLCV pertain to Bear Hunting; Plastic Bags; and Trash to Energy as a Class 1 Renewable Energy Source. Please support CTLCV financially, as it is an important and very worthy organization.

Home Energy Solutions:
You can do your part to combat climate change by taking advantage of state-subsidized Home Energy Solutions. There is no co-pay for making your home more efficient if you schedule by March 31, (though the service will be provided in the summer due to high demand). Generous incentives on insulation are offered. Call New England Conservation Services at 877-389-7077. Say the Jonah Center referred you. NECS makes a donation for each referral.
