International Composting Awareness Week

Welcome to International Compost Awareness Week

This year’s theme, Grow, Eat…Compost...Repeat, is based on the flow of organics from farm to table to farm again. It encourages us to recognize the importance of composting to support healthier soil, grow healthier food and create a more just and sustainable world.

Did you know, almost a quarter of what we put in our trash is food waste. That adds up to $1500 every year for a family of four.

A few simple changes can save money, reduce waste going to incinerators and landfills, and support a more sustainable lifestyle for you and our world. Here's some actions you can do this week!

• Watch our Facebook page (MiddletownRecyclingandPublicWorks ) for daily tips on composting.
• Check our website for information and videos on composting options in Middletown.
• It is best to compost at home, but if you can’t, consider bringing food waste to our drop off at the Recycling Center. We are also opening a new drop off location (to be announced soon!) in the south end of town and we will be collecting food waste this summer at the Middletown Farmer’s Market on Fridays. Food waste is a resource and there's lots of options to divert it from your trash.
• If composting is new to you, join us on Thursday, May 6 at 6pm to learn how to compost! The final session of the 7-part series WASTED: Small Efforts for Big Change is about the importance of composting on a large scale and how it can empower our communities, how to start composting at the backyard level, and about the importance of every individual to making a difference. Panelists:
