Mt. Higby Nature Walk Saturday Oct 3rd

From Beth Lepin

On Saturday, October 3, at 10AM, I will offer a hike at Mt. Higby in association with Middletown's Recreation Division.

We will be implementing a few changes related to maintaining everyone’s safety.

We are asking that all participants wear masks at all times. We are also asking you to sign up ahead of time with me by responding to this email.

The size of the group will be limited; priority will be given to those who were closed out/excluded from previous hikes due to size limitations or have not attended recently. By Friday, I will send an email confirming your status.

In the last two weeks if you have done any of the following, please do not join us:

  • Been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID
  • Had any of the known symptoms of COVID or felt unwell
  • Been in any of these states that are on the self-quarantine list

We welcome those who are willing to meet these guidelines. The details of the hike are as follows:

We will have a special opportunity to access the Mattabesett Trail through the city's water department lands that include Higby and Adder Reservoirs. This is the most difficult hike that we offer. It will last 3-4 hours, and covers 4-5 miles; most challenging is the rise and fall of elevation which totals ~1,600 feet. There are no facilities along the way.

Good hiking shoes are essential; bring a snack and plenty of water.

Directions: Mt. Higby, on Route 66, about a quarter-mile west of the junction with Higby Road (Red Dog Saloon), look for an unmarked driveway on the right (north) with an orange cone that leads to the reservoir leads to the reservoir (west of the driveway with mail box #238 Route 66, Middlefield). Follow it to the buildings and park.
