Driver Killed In Crash On I-91 In Middletown
The driver of a dump truck was killed in a crash on I-91 in Middletown on Thursday afternoon.
MIDDLETOWN, CT — A Branford man was killed in a crash on I-91 South in Middletown on Thursday afternoon, according to Connecticut State Police.
Police identified the victim as Richard J. Vining, 69, who was driving a dump truck and collided with an unoccupied vehicle that was parked in the acceleration lane on I-91 South near Exit 20 in Middletown.
The crash happened around 12:30 p.m.

Police said Vining had just got on I-91 and was traveling in the acceleration lane when “for an unknown reason” his truck struck the other vehicle in the rear.
The collision caused the dump truck to roll over and go through the metal beam guide rail adjacent to the acceleration lane, according to police.

Vining died from his injuries, police said.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Police are asking any witnesses to contact Trooper John Wilson at 860-534-1098 or email john.wilson @ct.gov. Anyone with a dashboard camera who was driving in the area of the crash at the time is also asked to contact Wilson.
