4 Hospitalized After Rollover Crash In Middletown

The crash closed part of Route 9 South for about two hours on Friday, according to officials.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Four people were hospitalized after a crash that temporarily closed part of Route 9 South on Friday morning. Route 9 South has reopened after being closed from Exits 19 to 16 for about two hours, according to fire officials.

Emergency crews responded to a rollover crash around 9 a.m. in the area of Exit 16. There were initial reports of people trapped with a vehicle on fire.

Arriving crews found “one vehicle on its side with the driver trapped but thankfully no fire,” officials wrote on the City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 union’s Facebook page.

Middletown police said a man was trapped in a Kia Sorento that was rolled on its side in the median. He was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Hartford Hospital.

A Chevrolet Malibu was on the western shoulder of Route 9 South and had sustained major damage, according to police. Three people needed to be extricated from the Malibu. One person was taken to Hartford Hospital, while two others were taken to Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.

Police said all of the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A preliminary investigation showed the Kia was traveling south on Route 9 through the Hartford Avenue intersection. The Chevrolet was traveling east on Hartford Avenue heading to Route 9 in order to travel north, according to police.

The vehicles collided in the south bound lane of Route 9 in the area of Hartford Avenue, police said.
