Winter Team State Championship History: Middletown Schools

MIDDLETOWN, CT — As practices for high school winter sports officially get underway Monday (girls basketball, ice hockey and wrestling) and Thursday (boys basketball, indoor track, boys swimming and girls gymnastics), hopes run high for all teams to achieve the ultimate goal: winning a league championship, and possibly a state title.

To help squads get into the championship mentality, here is a listing of the 41 CIAC winter team titles won by Xavier, Middletown and Mercy high schools, as well as the defunct Woodrow Wilson High School, in past years (* - indicates a co-op team).

Xavier

• boys indoor track (17) - State Open: 1999, 1996, 1988, 1987, 1986, 1980; Class L: 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1993, 1988, 1987, 1985, 1980, 1978; Class M: 1975
• wrestling (3) - State Open: 2012; Class LL: 2012, 2011

Middletown

• boys basketball (7) - Class L: 1994; Class M: 1978, 1977, 1976, 1969, 1968, 1964
• boys indoor track (5) - Class S: 1998; Class M: 1954, 1953, 1952, 1951
• wrestling (2) - Class L: 2008, 2007
• boys swimming (1) - Class M: 1993

Mercy

• girls basketball (3) - Class LL: 2018, 2013; Class L: 1996

Woodrow Wilson

• boys indoor track (2) - Class M: 1950, 1949
• boys swimming (1) - Class S: 1980
