MONROE, CT — Firefighters extinguished a large fire on Hattertown Road Sunday morning. Crews from several nearby towns helped extinguish the challenging blaze.

All occupants of the residence got out before fire crews arrived. The fire went through the first and second floors and flared into the attic due to the home's old Civil War-era construction.

Firefighters were challenged by the home's odd layout, black smoke conditions and a lack of nearby fire hydrants, Monroe Volunteer Fire Department said on Facebook.
