Firefighter Injured Battling 'Stubborn' Blaze In Monroe

Multiple fire houses responded to a 2-story barn fire which sent one firefighter to the hospital.

MONROE, CT — Multiple fire houses responded to a barn fire Saturday which sent one firefighter to the hospital.

At 10:30 p.m., crews from Stevenson Volunteer Company and Stepney Volunteer Fire Department answered a call for a structure fire at the 400 block of Wheeler Road.

First responders found a two-story barn with attached garages "heavily involved in fire," according to officials.

Firefighters were able to save nine out of 10 vehicles, and a dog managed to escape.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with injuries by Monroe Volunteer Medical Services, and was later released.

Officials called the fire "stubborn to extinguish" and determined it was caused accidentally by a heating source. Crews operated on scene until 3 a.m. and then had several hours of clean up as much hose and equipment became frozen, according to the report. The Monroe Department of Public Works was called upon to assist with ice management.
