MONROE, CT — An elderly man accidentally drove his car through a garage wall and into his home's basement Wednesday, according to the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department. The home is located in the lower Wheeler Road area.

The car struck the home's furnace. The driver wasn't injured and firefighters made sure the area was free of electric, water and heating oil hazards.

Later on in the day, firefighters responded to a report of smoke at a town-owned building. A faulty electrical fixture was the cause, officials said. They also dealt with a chimney fire in the area of upper Main Street in the overnight hours between Wednesday and Thursday.
