The Monroe Trails Day Hike is scheduled for June 4 at Chalk Hill Nature Trail.

The Chalk Hill Nature Trail has been selected as Monroe’s venue for a family-style hike on National Trails Day June 4 (Saturday) open to the public at no charge.

Co-sponsors of the hike: Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Department, Monroe Land Trust and Tree Conservancy and Monroe Conservation and Water Resources Commission.

Monroe’s Park Ranger David Solek is the trail leader. The route covers one-third-of-a-mile over terrain suitable for all ages. At least two old mine shafts, a landmark called Whale Rock and a variety of trees, ferns and wildflowers are on the itinerary.

The hike starts at 10 a.m. Participants are asked to assemble at the entrance to the trail behind Chalk Hill School off Fan Hill Road. Ample parking is available. Advance registration is suggested but not required.

Contact Marven Moss at mmoss36@yahoo.com or 203.268.2961. GPS coordinates for the assembly point June 4: 41.345760 and 73.235660.

Trails Day unfolds across the U.S. the first weekend in June, either Saturday or Sunday, and participation state-wide is heaviest in Connecticut where a majority of the state’s 169 communities take part under the administration of the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association.
