Mountain Lion Sightings Reported In Monroe

A couple of residents reported seeing a mountain lion. The likelihood of a mountain lion roaming Monroe is low.

MONROE, CT — Two Monroe residents reported possibly seeing a mountain lion roaming town last week.

Monroe Animal Control got reports of sightings on Wrabel Circle and Turkey Roost Road, according to the Connecticut Post.

Animal Control investigated and found no droppings, tracks or other evidence of a mountain lion roaming the areas, according to the Monroe Sun.

Mountain lion sightings are rare in Connecticut. A mountain lion was killed in Milford after being hit by a car in 2011. Genetic testing revealed it originated in South Dakota and traveled more than 1,500 miles, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The 2011 mountain lion was the first confirmed sighting in more than 100 years for Connecticut.

Mountain lions are also known as cougars. Males can be more than 8-feet-long and weigh between 130 and 150 pounds with females generally weighing between 65 and 90 pounds.. They tend to live in steep rocky canyons, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
