MONROE, CT — Tony Scott, a Republican and member of the Monroe Town Council, won a special election Tuesday for the 112th District seat vacated earlier this year by JP Sredzinski, according to unofficial results provided by the Monroe Registrar of Voters office.

Scott defeated Democrat Nick Kapoor, a member of the Monroe Board of Education, for the post. The district encompasses Monroe and part of Newtown, and the unofficial tally had Scott receiving 2,248 votes to Kapoor's 1,948. A third independent candidate, Bill Furrier, of Newtown, received 31 votes.

"I want to thank everyone who came out to vote to have their voices heard," Scott wrote on Facebook, stressing that he is honored to win the special election. "I will humbly be all your voices in Hartford. Thanks again!"

In a statement Tuesday night following his defeat, Kapoor congratulated Scott on the victory.

"I can’t tell you how grateful I am to all the people of Monroe and Newtown who honored me with their votes today and I promise to continue my efforts to ensure that the 112th District is one of the finest places to live in the state of Connecticut," Kapoor said. "Despite tonight’s results, I am proud to have made this effort. There was no way I could have sat by during this election and not fought as hard as possible for the principles and programs that I so firmly believe in."

State Sen. Tony Hwang, a Republican whose district includes Newtown, also congratulated Scott.

"I want to congratulate Tony Scott for his special election victory," Hwang said in a statement. "He is joining a delegation in Hartford to continue the fight for a responsible, responsive government. To represent Newtown and Sandy Hook is a privilege and this community deserves proper and active representation and I genuinely believe that Mr. Scott will do an excellent job.

"Representative-elect Tony Scott will be following in the capable footsteps of former Representative J.P. Sredzinski, who offered years of dedicated service in the State House. I am appreciative of his service and wish him the best in his future endeavors."
