The volunteer firefighter burned an SUV a day after it was recovered after being reported stolen, police said.
MONROE, CT — Stepney volunteer firefighter Matthew Bittner was charged with insurance fraud after he burned a vehicle that had been reported stolen, according to police.
Police got a report of a Chevrolet Tahoe on fire Oct. 23, according to the Monroe Sun. The vehicle was reported stolen Oct. 21, but recovered in Bridgeport Oct. 22.
Bittner told officers the vehicle must've been stolen a second time in Newtown and filed a report with that town at a later date, police said. Bittner and his friend Joseph Bogdanyi, 32, of Seymour were arrested.
