Statement from James Gessner, Jr., Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe

“The Mohegan Tribe is looking forward to the Senate confirmation of Congresswoman Deb Haaland as Secretary of the Department of Interior. As the first Native American appointed to the position, this is a historic appointment, one that gives hope to all Indigenous People of this land that we will be seen and heard by those in the federal government.

Having worked with Congresswoman Haaland, we can attest to her intellect, her abilities, and her forthrightness. Hers is an inspiring American story, a single parent who lived paycheck-to-paycheck and struggled to put herself through college. These lived experiences will help give Congresswoman Haaland a unique and informed perspective that will be invaluable in her new role, as will her passion to educate others about how to be good stewards of our land and environment.
