MONTVILLE, CT — Mohegan Sun had been planning on reopening soon, but Gov. Ned Lamont said it would be premature to open the casinos in the “near term.” He said it’s time to wait longer especially since the casinos attract an older population.

The news comes as many other businesses across the state will be permitted to reopen Wednesday. Mohegan Sun recently extended its closure to May 26.

Mohegan Sun officials wrote in a letter obtained by The Day that the casino had planned a June 1 reopening. The reopening would include "extraordinary measures" to protect people's safety, from temperature checks of everyone entering to the addition of hand sanitizer stations.

Lamont did not say when casinos should reopen, but added that governors across the region agree that now's not the right time.

When Mohegan Sun does reopen, only part of the property will be accessible, with areas such as The Earth Hotel and Mohegan Sun Arena remaining closed, The Day reported.
