Statement from James Gessner, Jr., Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe

“The Mohegan Tribe would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to fellow native and friend Congresswoman Deb Haaland on her nomination to serve as the first Native American Secretary of the United States Department of Interior.

Having worked directly and personally with Congresswoman Haaland, we can attest to her intellect, her abilities, and her forthrightness. Her background and experience demonstrate her appreciation of how important it is for us all to be stewards of our land and environment. She is an extremely qualified nominee.

This is a historic decision for all of Indian Country, one that gives hope to all Indigenous People of this land that we can be heard and understood by those in positions of power in Washington DC. This is a clear signal that the President-elect appreciates that this country's first people are fundamental to America's past, and also its future success.

We look forward with enthusiasm to working with Congresswoman Haaland once confirmed, and with the Biden-Harris Administration once they take office next month.”
