Police Get Portable Breathalyzers Donated By Non-Profit

The portable breathalyzers detect impaired drivers who register with low levels of alcohol, and can identify people having a medical issue.

MONTVILLE, CT — The Southeastern Regional Action Councildonated portable breath test devices to Montville Police for use in the field, police said on Facebook.

Police said the non-profit organization based in Norwich gave the department two Drager alcotest 6820 portable breathalyzers.

The mental health and substance abuse resource non-profit agency provides education, awareness and tools for the communities of eastern CT on "issues related to addictions and mental well-being across the behavioral health continuum through needs assessments, capacity building, and advocacy."

Montville passed a portable breathalyzer policy that permits officers to use the devices in the field.

"The portable breathalyzer may be used as the fourth field sobriety test when there is reasonable suspicion to believe that the operator is driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs," police wrote.

"The portable breath test will also provide officers in the field with an additional tool to help detect drug impaired operators who may not register with any or low levels of alcohol and those individuals who are experiencing medical issues."
