UPDATE: Police ID Man Killed In Preston Drive-By Shooting

Ledyard Police followed a car as it raced to the hospital with gunshot victim Robert Thompson inside. The 35-year-old Preston man died.

PRESTON, CT — Robert S. Thompson, 35, has been identified by state police as the person shot in killed in the Preston drive-by shooting in the predawn hours Saturday, state police said.

A person driving near the intersection of Route 12 and Route 2A called 911 at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday to say he heard gunshots on the roadway at the end of the Mohegan-Pequot Bridge. State police from Troop E in Montville responded but, according to a release from state cops, Ledyard Police were already "escorting" a car with gunshot victim Thompson inside to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Friday night, at around 8:30 p.m., Thompson checked in at Ballo Italian restaurant at Mohegan Sun on social media.

Thompson, known as 'Robbie T,' was a union carpenter and worker who had recently landed a job at the new Electric Boat expansion project in Groton.

Thompson was a Harley-Davidson aficionado and a weight lifter.

On his Facebook he notes he was unmarried and did not have children, but had many friends; nearly 4,000 on Facebook.


State police said Saturday that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was going to conduct an autopsy to positively identify Thompson, and determine a cause and manner of death. His identify was announced Monday at around noon.

State Police Eastern District Major Crimes is investigating the shooting. Police said detectives have "developed a person of interest" in the drive-by killing.
