Demolition of Building 25 in Naugatuck Begins Today

The building is the last major landmark of the borough's rubber industry.

Building 25 on Maple Street, once the home of Uniroyal, Inc. will be demolished starting today, the Republican-American reports.

The demolition began at 10 a.m. today and it is expected to take two to three days to demolish the building.

The building is the last major remnant of Naugatuck’s once thriving rubber industry and has been vacant since 1979, the paper reports. The Naugatuck Historical Society had plans to preserve the building but the cost for preservation increased to around $2 million and with the deteriorating state of the building it no longer made sense to preserve it.

The Board of Mayor and Burgesses allotted $98,000 to demolish the building.

According to the paper, borough officials believe the property that Building 25 sits on is the most valuable piece of commercial real estate downtown and hope the property will be more marketable with the building removed.
