Naugatuck Home to be Demolished for Violating Building Codes

The battle to demolish the home has been ongoing for nearly seven years.

A Naugatuck home is set to be demolished in early November following a seven year battle, My Citizen News reports.

The roof of the home located at 146 Walnut St., caved in over seven years ago, violating Naugatuck’s building codes, the paper reports. Officials asked that the house either be repaired or demolished.

The owner of the home, former Burgess and Tax Collector Lois Ackerman has filed multiple appeals to save her home from demolition. Ackerman told the paper she planned on making the necessary repairs but was unable to do so due to a lack of funding.

Public Works Director Jim Stewart told the paper the most recent injunction granted to Ackerman was to allow her to remove personal items from the home before demolition.

The injunction ends on Nov. 3 and the house is expected to come down shortly afterwards. According to the paper, Naugatuck has awarded a $19,440 contract to Ocean Trace Demolition of Watertown to demolish the house.
