"As of [Tuesday], our Department has investigated reports of 27 stolen vehicles and 46 thefts or attempted thefts from vehicles," Krolikowski said. "It is probable that these crimes are being committed by gang members. Many towns in Fairfield County are experiencing similar crimes."

The chief recommends the following to help avoid such crimes:

1. SECURE VALUABLES: NEVER leave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.

2. ALWAYS LOCK YOUR VEHICLE.
