New Canaan Considered Canceling Halloween, Ruled It Out: Moynihan

Wind and rain, heavy at times, are expected this evening.

NEW CANAAN, CT — It may be a bit wet this evening, but New Canaan First Selectman Kevin Moynihan hopes local trick-or-treaters still enjoy themselves this Halloween.

Heavy rain, accompanied by strong gusts of wind, is expected throughout the region tonight, but not enough to cancel the annual candy excursion.

"If there was a severe storm, we would have called it off," Moynihan told Patch Thursday morning. He spoke with Michael Handler, the town's Emergency Management director, about the decision.

Like Westport, which also is not canceling tonight's activities, Moynihan is suggesting parents decide for themselves whether they want their children out in the elements this Halloween. In the early evening hours, the rain might be light, but after 8 p.m. the showers and winds will gain momentum, according to forecasters.

Moynihan said he also spoke with Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson about Halloween, and she, too, is suggesting caution but is not canceling trick-or-treating.
