Connecticut Weather: Update On Christmas Snow, Freezing Cold

Once the snow ends on Christmas we're in for a major weather change for the rest of the week. Here are the latest details.

Connecticut is largely still on track to receive accumulating snow on Christmas morning. The most snow will be in Litchfield and northern Connecticut, while southeastern Connecticut is expected to receive the least due to warmer air mixing in. (UPDATE: Winter Weather Advisory Issued For Christmas Eve, Christmas Day)

The Christmas snow isn't expected to be a blockbuster as most places away from the coast are expecting 2-3 inches and areas far north could see 3 to 5 inches, according to National Weather Service projections. The immediate coast could see 1-3 inches and NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said from Westbrook to Stonington there may only be a mix that produces a minor slushy accumulation.

Hanrahan said the odds of any part of Connecticut receiving six inches of snow is "quite low" but ">3" are pretty high north and west of Hartford."

"Our forecast from yesterday seems to be in good shape. The only change I'd make is to introduce a 0-1" contour from Westbrook to Stonington and about 10 miles inland in New London County due to a lot of rain. Sorry about that SE CT friends!" Hanrahan said.

Once the snow ends Christmas morning, we're headed toward the coldest air of the season. Daytime highs will only be in the teens by Wednesday and Thursday and more snow is possible Friday into Saturday. Temps won't approach 32 degrees from Tuesday through at least next Saturday. Low temps on Wednesday and Thursday night could approach 5 degrees.
