Obituary: Joseph J. D'Amico

Beloved Father and Grandfather

Joseph J. D’Amico, age 80, of Shelton, entered into rest on Monday, March 2, 2020, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport. He was the beloved husband of the late Carol Ann D’Amico. Joseph was born in Bridgeport on July 21, 1939, son of the late Pasquale and Maria (DeLucia) D’amico, and he lived in Shelton for over fifty years.
Joseph lived a simple life. He enjoyed walking at the Huntington Post Office, greeting and making small talk with the daily customers. Everyone knew him from the post office and from attending mass every morning at St. Lawrence Church. He loved plants and had a special fig tree that he cared for like a baby; dragging it in and out of the garage to keep it warm, but also making sure it always got enough sun too. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and always gave them little treasures that he had stored up like fancy greeting cards or church calendars. Every time they would visit with him, he wouldn’t let them leave without sending them home with some sort of gift, even if it was just the bag of popcorn from his cabinet. He also enjoyed taking them to his annual post office Christmas party every year, and it became a favorite family tradition. One of his favorite activities was grocery shopping, even when his legs couldn’t take all the walking he would hop on a little scooter and spend hours circling the store. Nothing made him happier then playing with his grand-puppies. As soon as they knew he was at the door they would go crazy and he loved talking to them and sneaking them treats. Even though together they were nearly twice his size, he would let them hop on his lap- smothering him in kisses, both competing for more attention from him. His arrival always resulted in complete puppy mania! Although definitely an independent spirit, he loved nothing more than managing things and taking care of others. He was a loving son and brother, a devoted father and husband, and an adored grandfather.
Joseph is the beloved father of Marianne D’Amico-Ferrari, Marc D’Amico and his wife Lizette, and Christopher D’Amico. He also leaves a sister, Susan Scianna, six cherished grandchildren, Katelyn Ferrari, Nicholas Ferrari, and Mallory Ferrari, Marc J. D’Amico, Isabelle Porter and Morgan Porter and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, his twin Patrick D’Amico and Anthony D’Amico.
The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements, which are private.
Memorial contributions are requested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (www.st.jude.org). Online condolences can be offered at www.riverviewfh.com.
