St. Luke's Basketball Completes FAA Double

The St. Luke’s Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball Teams were crowned FAA Champions on back-to-back evening’s, following wins against Greens Farms Academy.

Boys Varsity edged out a nail-biting contest on Thursday, Feb. 27, beating the Dragons 56-52 on their home court. It was the Storm’s first tournament crown since the 2016-17 season, and head coach Tony Newsom was thrilled with his players. “I am so proud of this team. The players have done everything the coaching staff has asked of them, and nothing could be more satisfying than seeing them rewarded for their hard work with a championship. I feel extremely fortunate to coach these fine young men.”

The St. Luke’s Girls team was also paired against Greens Farms in the championship game on Friday, Feb. 28. The Storm won its fifth straight title 76-55 in front of a boisterous home crowd, after pulling away from the Dragons late in the game. Head coach Matt Ward was extremely proud of his team: “This might have been our most complete performance of the season. We are exactly where we need to be as we head into the New England Tournament. I’m so pleased with how hard this group has worked to get to this point, and how hard they’ve pushed each other to be better. This is a special group.”

Both teams won their regular season titles with undefeated league records and now turn their attention to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) tournaments this week.

The St. Luke’s Boys team was given the number four seed in Class B and beat a tough Roxbury Latin School in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 2. The Storm battled to a 57-47 victory to set up a semifinal contest against number one seed Brooks School. The final-four showdown will take place at St. Mark’s School on Saturday, March 7, at 2pm, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s final at Worcester State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5pm.

The Storm Girls, the number two seed, hosted Williston Northampton School in Wednesday’s quarterfinal. In a fast-paced contest, Sophie Kriftcher ‘20 and Janelle Johnson ‘20 scored 20 points each in a convincing 79-52 win. St. Luke’s now hosts number six seed Groton School on Saturday, March 7, at 4:30pm. The winner advances to Sunday’s final at Noble and Greenough School in Denham, Mass. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15pm.
