St. Luke's Golf Back To Defend Title

The St. Luke's Golf Team has another talented squad despite graduating a number of great players the last few years

The St. Luke’s Varsity Golf Team has won four straight FAA titles but was not afforded the opportunity to win its fifth straight in 2020 due to the cancellation of the season. The Storm is now chomping at the bit to get back to interscholastic competition.

Head Coach Jason Warner returns for his eighth year and is eager for the competition to begin: “We are all very happy to be back on the course. It is a tremendous relief to get back outside with the kids, who are having fun and competing.”

The 2021 squad is captained by Jack Fitzgibbon ‘21, Blake Haden ‘21, and Anders Ernberg ‘21, and Warner hopes they will guide the younger members of the team: “The most important thing I want from the captains is to show the younger players how to act on the course: How to respond under pressure. How to approach each shot. How to react to bad shots. How to treat other players. How to take care of the golf course by replacing divots, fixing ball marks, etc. I know Jack, Blake, and Anders will lead by example.”

St. Luke’s has graduated a number of talented golfers the last couple of years, but Warner is confident he has other gifted players to continue to challenge for honors: “It is going to be difficult to five-peat, especially against the likes of Brunswick School, who are very deep and have lots of talent. Hamden Hall has had some super young players in the pipeline for years. They will be in high form this season, too. We also have excellent players, so it should be a fun season.”

One of those players is Ben Loomis ‘22, who is the current club champion at the Country Club of New Canaan. Warner has been impressed with the junior’s form, as well as some of the younger players on the team: “Loomis is playing very well, but I’m seeing great things out of sophomores Peter Cioffi and Matt Riccardi. I have not seen them play since tryouts more than 18 months ago, but they’ve grown up physically and mentally. Along with veteran talent Eoin Mueller ‘23, they could replace our graduating seniors as team leaders. Chad Ruggiero is a tremendous player and an outstanding human being who has won a number of junior tournaments outside of school. He, along with Watson Meyer ’24, Eli Brody ‘24, and Matty Shulman ‘25, could be the core of our team for the next few years.”
