NEW CANAAN, CT — A snapping turtle that had become stuck in Lakeview Cemetery this week was rescued by New Canaan firefighters, according to a post on the department's Facebook page.

Firefighters were called to the cemetery at about 5 p.m. on Thursday, and they found the turtle wedged between a culvert valve and a retaining wall in a stream.

To free the turtle, the firefighters had to use hand tools to chip away at the stone retaining wall to create enough space to be able to lift it out of the stream. The whole rescue took about an hour.
