Newington Schools To End Popular D.C. Trip
The school system has decided to end the popular trip.
NEWINGTON, CT — Newington Public Schools is doing away with its popular 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip. An online petition has garnered nearly 1,000 signatures to restore the trip. This could be the last year for Newington 8th graders to take part in the tradition.
Interim School Superintendent Pamela Muraca said that the cost per student was between $400 and $500 and the trip created a strong need for substitute teachers, according to NBC Connecticut. There was also increased liability with the trip. The school system is looking at day trip options to Boston, New York and other nearby locations.
" I know that I had a great time years ago when I went and all the kids always look forward to going," said Melissa Fusco, organizer of the petition. "My son will be in the 8th grade next year and now will have to miss out on this experience.
