Obit: Robert Cashman, 81, Of Newington

He was a member of the Newington and Berlin Police Departments and a lay minister.

Robert H. Cashman Sr., 81, of Jay, ME and Newington, CT, beloved husband to Geraldine (Toce) Cashman passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, December 26, 2018 surrounded by his wife and children in Farmington, ME. Bob was born April 30, 1937 in Hartford, CT to Roy and Margaret (Sweeney) Cashman, where he resided and graduated from Weaver High School with the class of 1955. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy and serving his country overseas, he came back home to Connecticut and married his love Geraldine in 1966.

Bob was a proud member of the Newington and Berlin Police Departments and one of the founding members of the Newington Volunteer Ambulance Association. Bob was also an ordained Lay Minister for many years for the Archdiocese of Hartford and a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Church in Wethersfield. Bob was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge 2308 in Rocky Hill, and a past Post Commander of the VFW Hannon-Hatch Post 9929.

Besides his wife of nearly 53 years, Bob leaves his son Robert Jr. and wife Sharon of Newington, CT, two daughters Mary Houle and husband Kevin of Newington, CT and Kerry Jackson and husband Jake of Jay, ME, all of whom will spend the rest of their lives striving to be half the parent that he was; seven grandchildren: Rebecca, Kylee, Haley, Nicholas, Jason, Sean and Juliana, who loved their grandpa with all of their hearts and will eat strawberry ice cream every chance they get, even if their parents say no.

While Bob grew up as an only child, he was welcomed like a brother into the Toce family and leaves behind seven brothers- and sisters-in law and their families: Victoria and Bill Wallace, Gerald Toce Jr., Anthony Toce and Loretta Young, Margaret and Denis Guertin, Susan and Gerald Gacek, David and Diane Toce, Kathy and Chris Bonaiuto, and many nieces and nephews who will remember their Uncle Bob as the best Santa at every Toce Christmas Eve party. Bob will also be missed dearly by his close friend Kathleen O’Keefe and the grandpets he cared for daily, Dixon and Simba.

He was predeceased by his parents, two infant children: Margaret and Marc, aunt Gertrude Sweeney, in-laws Gerald Sr. and Mary Toce, nephew Anthony Jr., and close childhood friend Don O’Keefe.

Condolences may be left at www.wilesrc.com Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, January 4th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 5th at 11:30 a.m. directly at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington. Burial will be private at the Connecticut State Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown.
