Obituary: Doris Yocum, Ph.D., 89, of New Milford

NEW MILFORD, CT -- Doris E. Yocum, Ph.D, longtime New Milford resident, died peacefully on July 7, 2018 at the age of 89.

Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Dr. Yocum joined the faculty in 1971. She had previously been a faculty member at the State University of New York Stony Brook, as well as a teaching fellow at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned both her undergraduate and doctoral degrees. She continued lecturing worldwide after her retirement.

A passionate advocate of higher education, she created two scholarships in the name of her mother, Lorena Rahn Yocum: one at the Preston High School, Bronx, New York; and one at her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences.

Raised in Pennsylvania, Dr. Yocum was predeceased by her brothers Charles and Donald. She is survived by her nephew Richard C. Yocum, MD, of California, and niece, Kimberly F. Yocum of Pennsylvania.
