Three news businesses - including a nationally known restaurant chain - are about to open or build at the shopping complex off Route 1.

GUILFORD, CT - Town officials are excited that Guilford Commons will be seeing some significant additions in 2019.

Economic Development Coordinator Brian McGlone reports that recent commitments to the town's biggest shopping complex include Mattress Firm (a move from Route 1 near Exit 59), Pure Barre, an exercise studio.

In addition, McGlone said many residents have been asking for - and they will be getting their wish. As, he said "expected to build on the open area, left side of the driveway as you enter" is Panera Bread.

He said he doesn't have the exact timing of opening of Panera, but construction is expected to start with better spring weather in 2019.

McGlone said while it has taken awhile to add new stores to Guilford Commons to those already operating the owners - Site Centers (formerly DDR) "remain optimistic and committed to Guilford."

"They made a significant investment in Guilford Commons," the economic development director said. "The local demographics remain strong, and easy on/off Rt. 95 is a benefit. People find the complex attractive and inviting after they enter. Continued advertising and visibility of what is located there will support their long-term success," McGlone added.

McGlone said the ongoing construction on nearby Route 1 will benefit shops in Guilford Commons.

He said The Mews & The Woods at the Gatehouse and apartments (School House Manor) are underway, including new office developments (Agemy Financial & New Haven Middlesex Real Estate).

"That should bring additional traffic to Guilford Commons and throughout town," McGlone said.

The 123,113-square-foot complex is currently home to The Fresh Market, Bed Bath & Beyond, DSW, Ulta, Michaels, Petco, Charming Charlie, Verizon and Hair Cuttery.
