New Cell Phone Scam Targets Residents: North Branford Police
Police shared details of the scam and tips on how to protect yourself.
NORTH BRANFORD, CT — North Branford police are warning residents about the danger of phone scammers.
Here is what North Branford police said.
“Recently we received a fraud complaint that a residents cell phone became disabled and a blinking notification popped up displaying a phone number.

“The victim was unable to use his cell phone other than to dial the number displayed. The victim called the number and spoke to a scammer with a heavy accent who alleged the cell phone had been hacked and involved with criminal activity.
“The scammer said in order to unlock the phone and track the hackers they needed several gift cards and requested large amounts of money.

“Legit services will never request or demand payments by gift cards, money orders etc. If you suspect something’s odd it probably is.
