North Branford School Calendar Anticipates Snow Days for 2013-14

With so many weather-related cancellations over the last few years, the North Branford Board of Ed sets the calendar for next year.

With the 2012-13 graduation still weeks away – on Tuesday, June 25 – thanks to at least 10 snow and hurricane days, the North Branford Board of Education has finalized the calendar for the 2013-14 school year.

Due to the weather events in the recent years, the Board’s Calendar Committee had been discussing adjustments to the calendar and the various vacations scheduled throughout the year.

A group of North Branford parents also presented a petition to eliminate February vacation.

“We had been talking about it, but it was good to know how they felt and appreciated their thoughts,” said BOE Chair Marcey Onofrio.

The 2013-14 year will begin on Thursday, Aug. 29 and is scheduled to end on Monday, June 16. The calendar includes the standard holidays – Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day and Memorial Day – along with Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, February break and April break and a set of Professional Development days on Nov. 4 and 5.

Onofrio said that the first three snow days will be added to the end of the school calendar to bring the last day to June 19. After those three days, makeup days will be taken from February break, starting at the end and including Presidents Day, if necessary.

If school cancellations exceed eight days, the makeup days will be added beyond June 19.
