“Color Your World” Horticultural Show
"Color Your World" Horticultural Show Displayed A Wide Variety of Flowers and Plants
The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven presented a Horticultural Flower Show at the North Haven Library to share their exhibits and to provide an educational opportunity for the community. Visitors enjoyed seeing the variety of plants and flowers and took advantage of the event to ask questions about the exhibits and about their own plants.
The 145 exhibits were judged by 2 panels of certified Flower Show Judges from the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut Judges’ Council. Winners were identified in each of the classes with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention ribbons. One Grower’s Choice Award is offered to the correctly named blue-ribbon winner scoring 95 or above for container grown plants in the Houseplants Section. This award was presented to the Phalaenopsis Orchid owned by Daytime Gardener Sally Brockett. One Arboreal Award is given to the blue ribbon winner scoring 95 or above in the Arboreal Section. The Arboreal Award was presented to the Japanese White Pine exhibited by Sharon Bender. One Award of Horticultural Excellence is offered to the highest scoring, correctly named blue-ribbon winner in the entire Horticulture Division. The Phalaenopsis Orchid owned by Sally Brockett also won this award.
Awards of Merit were also presented to exhibits that were correctly named and scored 95 or above in their sections. Award of Merit winners were: Annuals - the geranium entered by Daytime Gardener Brenda Howlett; Bulbs - Asiatic Lily entered by Daytime Gardener Patricia Cramer; Perennials – Shasta Daisy entered by Daytime Gardener Janice Meinsen; Hosta – large variegated leaf entered by Daytime Gardener Helen Nado; Roses – Tess of the d’Urbervilles entered by Daytime Gardener Irene Cowern; Vines – Honeysuckle entered by Daytime Gardener Helen Nado.

A show evaluation panel reviewed various aspects of the entire show, including organization, publicity, educational exhibits and other features. The show received a score of 95. These judges provide feedback to the committee so members learn more about how to prepare and present a show.
