NORTH HAVEN, CT — After more than 60 years in New Haven, Ferraro’s Market is moving to North Haven early next year.
Ferraro’s will leave its Grand Avenue location on Dec. 31, the New Haven Independent first reported.
The legendary family owned and operated market is moving into a 7,000-square-foot space on Universal Drive in North Haven. The supermarket is expected to open some time in January in the former Payless Shoes location next to Target in the North Haven Commons shopping center, according to the New Haven Register.

First Selectman Michael Freda has been trying to lure Ferraro’s to North Haven for a while.
“It has been a goal of mine to bring a supermarket into that side of our town to offer our residents another shopping option,” Freda told Patch. “Ferraro’s Market will be a wonderful addition to North Haven and will have a positive impact on our resident’s shopping experience. Ferraro’s is also part of a broader economic development strategy of mine to bring in new and unique businesses to North Haven.”

Sal Ferraro started the business in 1952 as Mohawk Market on State Street in New Haven before moving in the 1970s to its current location at 664 Grand Ave.
Victoria Ferraro, a third-generation family member who helps run the market, told the New Haven Independent the neighborhood has gotten too dangerous for many customers who travel from other neighborhoods or from the suburbs.
Co-owner Peter Ferraro also told the Independent that a desire to downsize from the market’s current 20,000-square-foot space was more of a driving factor for the move than crime in the area.
The family also operates the Meat King delivery service, which expanded the business to satellite neighborhood locations.
