Man Stole Thousands In Rings From Jewelry Store: North Haven PD

The man told staff he was interested in buying a diamond ring and left the store with several rings, according to police.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A New Haven man is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of diamond rings from a jewelry store in North Haven last month, according to police.

Police responded to Libero Jewelers at 344 Washington Ave. on Dec. 29, 2020 for the reported theft. Officers found that a man entered the store and began working with staff to look at diamond rings because he said he was interested in buying one, according to police.

Staff showed the man several rings and “when an opportunity presented itself,” he grabbed multiple rings and left the store, police said. He entered a white Lexus that was waiting in the parking lot. The rings were valued at tens of thousands of dollars, according to police.

Isaiah Smith, 25, was identified as the suspect following an investigation. Smith was arrested Tuesday with the assistance of the New Haven Office of Adult Probation, who caught up with Smith as he arrived for a probation visit for an unrelated matter, police said.

Smith was charged with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny. He was released after posting a $75,000 bond.
