North Haven Woman, 76, Stole $41K In Adoption Fraud: Officials

The woman is accused of receiving more than $41,000 over a three-year period after a child was removed from her care, according to officials

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A North Haven woman is accused of stealing more than $41,000 in state adoption subsidy payments by filing fraudulent documents, according to authorities.

Geraldine Leak, 76, of Pool Road, was arrested Friday by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State's Attorney's Office. She was charged with first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community.

Authorities said that from June 2016 until August 2019, Leak received $41,734.83 in subsidies she wasn’t entitled to receive from the state Department of Children and Families. DCF had removed a child from her care on May 31, 2016, according to a news release from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.

Leak was released after posting a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on June 4. She faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
