Rotary Grant Support New Garden at Peter's Rock Park
The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven received a Rotary Club of North Haven grant that will be used to support the new xeriscape garden near the pavillon at the entrance to Peter’s Rock Park. The newly designed garden features plants that are drought tolerant, deer resistant, and low maintenance, yet will attract important pollinators to the area. Landscape fabric under the small stones will assist in minimizing weed growth and conserving moisture. The plants include cone flowers (echinacea), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), torch lily or poker plant (Kniphofia uvaria), yucca (Yucca flaccida), sea thrift (Armeria maritima), silver mound (Artemisia schmidtiana), and prickly pear cactus (Opuntia). The prickly pear cactus was chosen because there are some prickly pear cactus growing at the summit of Peter’s Rock. They have been growing there for decades, but many people do not get to see them. Now, everyone can enjoy watching how these plants grow in the conveniently located garden at the entrance to the park. Of course, a hike to the summit is still an exhilarating venture. The Daytime Gardeners appreciate the support from the Rotary Club of North Haven and encourages residents to visit the new garden to view the xeriscape concept and to hike the Rock!
