Seeking New Clean Energy Task Force Members

With the “light at the end of the tunnel” in view regarding the pandemic, we all can begin to focus on the greatest threat to our children, grandchildren, and future generations – the growing threat of climate change. How can we as local residents make an impact reducing this threat – and at the same time save money and create jobs and businesses through a clean energy economy?

On way is to become a member of the North Haven Clean Energy Task Force! As a Town-sponsored task force, we work closely with Town officials to promote and provide opportunities for energy conservation and clean energy. We have had many successes, including:

• Energy efficiency for town residents: We have conducted 3 successful Home Energy Solutions (HES) assessment campaigns, helping hundreds of homeowners to lower their energy costs, while raising donations for SARAH and recently the North Haven Food Pantry.
• Orchestrating two successful Solarize North Haven campaigns to promote residential solar installations.
• Numerous community forums on climate change, energy efficiency, solar power, and state resources.

• Developing and presenting a “speakers bureau” presentation on climate change, task force and Town government successes, and what citizens can do to invest in energy efficiency and clean energy alternatives.

However, we need new members to build on our successes and expand our work with new projects. Things are changing for the good: our state and federal government, along with non-profit and private sector entities, are expanding programs and resources to help residents, municipalities and businesses move to greater energy efficiency and clean energy sources. Here are some new initiatives we would like to conduct, with additional help:

• The HeatSmart program that promotes clean heating and cooling technologies like heat pumps.

• Promoting the CT Green Bank’s program to subsidize battery storage for homes with solar arrays.
• Supporting municipal programs like Sustainable CT and the SolSmart program
• Encouraging our school district to expand solar and high efficiency HVAC systems.
• Promoting Community Solar for residents and businesses that install solar arrays.
