Have you decided what you’re going to be for Halloween?
Americans will spend close to $6.9 billion on Halloween costumes this year, or $74.34 per person in 2015, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF).
“Those celebrating will spend the most on adult costumes ($1.2 billion), and will spend a total of $950 million on children’s costumes and $350 million on fashionable and fun costumes for their furry friends,” the NRF said on their website.
“With Halloween falling in a Saturday this year, some are planning on celebrating all weekend long,” said Kathleen Olsen, District Manager of Danbury, Conn. Spirit Halloween Store. “Thursday night is bar night, then there is Friday and Saturday, so people are spending a lot more on costumes. It’s definitely a huge deal this year.”
Eighty-one percent of those who will engage in spirited activities include 18 to 34-year-olds, according to the NRF. College students Allie Guerriero, of Bethel, and Carmine Pannizzo, of New Fairfield, looked great as Star Wars characters Princess Leia and Chewbacca. Another family purchased Star Wars costumes for the whole family. “The mom, dad, the kids and pets all got something,” Olsen said.
She noted that some shoppers plan on wearing multiple costumes with three days to carouse.
“We don’t have an exact plan yet,” said Guerriero, “but we’re definitely partying all weekend long,” Pannizzo smiled.
Another shopper was debating between a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Leonardo suit or anime character Nicholas Brown. “Both use a katana,” B.J.Prak of Danbury explained.
The top sellers for adults this year, according to Olsen, include couples costumes, Superheroes, Disney princesses, Star Wars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For kids, the hottest seller is The Descendants, Disney villains from the hit 2015 movie.
“We’re gearing up for a crazy weekend. It’s definitely a huge event this year,” Olsen stated.
