Driver Gives Norwich Cop a Lift; Helps Cop Nab Suspect

A passerby saw an officer involved in a foot chase and offered him a ride, ultimately dropping him off right in front of the suspect.

Two Norwich police officers were conducting a motor vehicle stop on Wednesday, June 1, when the unexpected happened.

Officers Matthew Seidel and Michael Krodel of the Norwich Police Community Policing Unit were responding to a reported road rage incident on Taftville Occum Road.

When they pulled a vehicle over in relation to the incident, the driver reportedly left the scene on foot. So the officers followed him on foot, too.

A passerby saw the officer running, pulled over in their car and asked Seidel if he wanted a ride, according to a press release from Lt. Christopher Conley. Seidel accepted and the driver dropped him off on Taftville Occum Road, right in front of the man who fled.

The man has been identified as Duane Crawford, 27, of 92 Sherwood Lane, Norwich. He was arrested on the following charges:

  • Operating a motor vehicle while under suspension
  • Possession of cocaine
  • Possession of less than an ounce of cocaine, with intent to sell
  • Interfering with a police officer
  • Breach of peace in the second degree

An investigation revealed that Crawford was named in a ‘remand to custody order’ by the state Department of Correction, for parole violation.

He was released to DOC custody, issued a $10,000 non-surety bond and given a June 16 court date.
