Norwich Conservation Group Holds Rain Garden Workshop
The Eastern Connecticut Conservation District is holding the event on June 30.

From The Eastern CT Conservation District: The Eastern Connecticut Conservation District will be offering a build-a-rain-garden workshop at Voluntown Peace Trust in Voluntown on June 30, 10:00 AM. The workshops will teach homeowners how they can reduce the amount of stormwater that leaves their property. Stormwater runoff (non-point source pollution) transports pollutants into nearby watercourses and eventually into Long Island Sound.
The workshop is scheduled for 10:00 AM on June 30, 2018 located at Voluntown Peace Trust, 539 Beach Pond Road in Voluntown. At the workshop, you will learn how to create a rain garden as part of your landscape. Rain gardens are gardens planted in a shallow depression located where they will intercept stormwater runoff and soak it into the ground. Unlike water gardens, rain gardens are designed to drain before mosquitoes can use them for breeding. In a rain garden, homeowners can plant a variety of native plants that are adapted to this climate. A few lucky homeowners per town within the ECCD area may even qualify for a free rain garden installed on their property with the assistance of the Boy Scouts of America and possibly Girl Scouts of CT.
After an indoor presentation, participants will gain hands-on experience installing a rain garden on site. Gloves & tools will be provided. If you are interested in involving your troop, attending a rain garden or rain barrel workshop, or installing a rain garden or rain barrel at your home, school, church or business, please contact Maura Robie at 860-319-8807 or email her at maura.robie@comcast.net. Pre-registration for the workshops is required.
