Norwich Scholastic Fall Sports: Past Titles, 2018 Schedules

NORWICH, CT — Practice is now officially underway for all eight CIAC-sanctioned fall sports in Connecticut, with boys and girls cross country, field hockey, football, boys and girls soccer, girls swimming and girls volleyball teams setting out on their quests for league and state championships.

Among schools in Patch communities in Middlesex and New London counties, Xavier is the all-time leader with 35 fall team championships, followed by St. Bernard (34) and Norwich Free Academy (24).

Area schools looking to repeat their 2017 state titles are Haddam-Killingworth boys and girls cross country (both Class SS), Xavier boys cross country (State Open and LL), East Lyme boys cross country (MM), Morgan boys soccer (S) and Old Lyme girls soccer (S).

Norwich Free Academy's 24 fall state titles date back to 1933. Norwich Tech has never claimed a fall championship.

Here are the state championships won by NFA teams in autumns past, as well as a link to this fall's schedule of varsity contests for both schools.

• boys cross country (13) - State Open: 1971, 1963, 1962, 1961, 1956, 1935, 1934, 1933; L: 1971, 1964, 1963, 1962, 1961
• girls cross country (10) - LL: 2009, 2000, 1997, 1995, 1993, 1992, 1984, 1977; State Open: 1993, 1993
• girls volleyball (1) - LL: 2008
