Outdoor Game Park, Ski Slope, Housing: All Possibilities for Norwich State Hospital Property
The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority is looking at creating different opportunities for people visiting the area, beyond casino gaming.
The Norwich State Hospital property is located off Route 12 in Preston. Founded in 1904 as the Norwich State Hospital for the Insane, the hospital is on the National Register of Historic Places.
More than a hundred years later, the property may contain something quite different from its roots. The Mohegan Tribe agreed to purchase the Norwich State Hospital property and hopes to open a complex featuring various forms of entertainment and housing.
According to the Hartford Courant, residents of Preston will vote on the deal between the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority and the town at a May 19 town meeting.
Possibilities for the property include:
- Housing for a 55-and-older population
- A synthetic ski area
- An outdoor game park
- Office space
- Shopping
- Restaurants
The property would not feature gaming. If residents approve the purchase and construction begins, the new entertainment/housing complex construction could begin within three years and be finished in five years.
