Orange Police Department Gain Two New K-9s

Jobs are hard to come by for many new graduates across the country, but “Major” hasn’t had any trouble finding a position.

After graduating from the State Police K-9 Academy earlier this month, he has just joined The Orange Police Department as a patrol K-9. He trained in the Academy along with his handler Officer Chris Brown. The intensive 15-week training program trained “Major” in tracking, evidence recovery and apprehension.

"The Department's efforts to protect and serve the community will be greatly enhanced by the continuation and enhancement of the K-9 program," said Police Chief Gagne.

The Department has been awarded an American Kennel Club grant to help cover some of the costs of having “Major” on the team.  The grant matches national American Kennel Club  funds with local American Kennel Club affiliated local clubs donations up to $10,000.00.

“Major” will be joined in the K-9 program later this month by “Trent”, a purebred Labrador and narcotics detection K-9. Over his 12-week program he is being trained to detect numerous illegal drugs including Marijuana, Heroin, Ecstasy, Opiates, and Bath Salts.
